It seems like backyard chickens are everywhere in the news today. Cities all across Canada are starting to allow small flocks of urban chickens. That includes Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Brampton, Guelph and Niagara Falls.
Most urban chicken laws have a few things in common:
- Just a small number of hens. No roosters allowed!
- Owners are responsible for keeping food locked up, and a clean coop
So why keep backyard chickens? Everyone has their own reasons. For some, it is a little bit like gardening: a nice way to get involved in producing your own food. Others enjoy raising chickens as pets, and the fresh eggs are just a wonderful bonus.
